Samuels, Purdue University Jeffrey A. Description For introductory undergraduate or graduate courses in statistics aimed at life science majors. Bringing Statistics to Life The Fifth Edition of Statistics for the Life Sciences uses authentic examples and exercises from a wide variety of life science domains to give statistical concepts personal relevance, enabling students to connect concepts with situations they will encounter outside the classroom.
Content and Approach Real data in the examples and exercises provide practical and relevant ways for students to connect concepts to situations they will encounter outside the classroom. Probability theory is included only to support statistics concepts.
Students are taught to recognize the importance of an analysis that is appropriate for the research question to be answered, for the statistical design of the study, and for the nature of the underlying distributions. Students are led to recognize the impact on real research of design concepts such as random sampling, randomization, efficiency, and the control of extraneous variation by blocking or adjustment. The text concludes with a summary of all of the inference methods presented in the book and provides exercises that require students to apply all of what they have learned.
Randomization methods have been added at the beginnings of Chapters 7, 8, 10, 11, and 12 to introduce or motivate most inference procedures in the text. While statistical software is not required to use this text, there are ample opportunities for students to implement the statistical methods learned using any statistical software package of their choosing. Electronic data files are provided for most examples and exercises.
Unit Highlights provide a chance for students to connect ideas across multiple chapters. They include reflections, summaries, additional examples, and exercises. New to This Edition. Updated and new exercises appear throughout the book, and many exercises from the previous edition that involved calculation and reading tables have been updated to require interpretation of computer output.
Updated examples reflect current research from a variety life science disciplines, replacing many older examples in the previous edition. Unit Highlights were added to provide a necessary opportunity for students to connect ideas across multiple chapters.
Material on randomization-based inference has been added to introduce or motivate most inference procedures presented in this text. Why is it that the early study of sexuality, and the concomitant conceptualization of sexual identity, occurred principally in German-speaking countries? And why was the sexual terminology that these sexologists introduced so influential? Tobin addresses these questions by exploring the ways in which medical, literary and political debates on homosexuality were intermeshed with broader cultural and historical developments.
This focus can be justified on the grounds that it is precisely at the margins that identities come into question and are the subject of negotiation. These writers both documented and problematized the rise of the new vocabulary of sexology. So why did the science of sexuality emerge in Germany and its peripheries, rather than, say, in England or in France? According to Tobin, the discourse on homosexuality — the mode of sexual deviance that most preoccupied German- speaking writers — was bound up with the emergence of the German Empire, established by Otto von Bismarck in at the end of the Franco—Prussian war, and with a specifically German notion of bourgeois liberalism.
The unification of Germanic principalities into the German nation state, as well as the restructuring of the Habsburg Empire as the Austro-Hungarian Empire, provided the occasion for rethinking existing legal codes, and for considering the decriminalization of sodomy, with all its ethico-medical and civic implications. Some of the earliest writings on sexuality were explicitly motivated by emancipatory agendas, and, more specifically, the desire to ensure basic human rights for homosexuals.
Drawing links between homosexuals and Jews, he argued that homosexuality was analogous to race or ethnicity, and thus similarly deserving of human rights protection.
Like Ulrichs, Kertbeny believed that the innate character of homosexual desire warranted its protection by the modern legal state. That said, there are a number of questions that remain unaddressed concerning the wider European context, other national specificities, and the transnational exchange of ideas and concepts.
In France, for example, the sexological debate was dominated almost exclusively by psychiatrists and physicians, rather than non-medical writers pursuing an activist agenda; emerging slightly later, it drew on the nomenclature already established by the German-speaking writers or else proposed categories that did not catch on.
